What is the history of decorated Incense Box Holders? Were these ever used to deliver royal messages?
The first record of incense box holders dates back to the Ming dynasty in China. They were originally prohibited to all but the uppermost members of the elite and ruling families. That being the case, one early use was to deliver messages in them amongst the royalty. The messages were deemed safe because the penalty for being caught with one by anyone for whom possession was forbidden was a slow and painful death (a common torture was to tie the accused spread-eagled and suspended over a growing bed of bamboo; the shoots, which grow as much as 12″ per day, were sharpened and grew through the victim in a matter of days).
The second wife of the 3rd Ming emperor was caught with a message in her incense box holder to her Korean allies in a plot to overthrow her husband. The message was secreted between the dragon engraving on the lid and a false panel between it and the base, and it was discovered when the box fell into the Yangtze as her retinue was crossing at a flooded ford.
She was executed publicly and her head was carried throughout China on a pike for the next 18 months, until the skull was was stolen by her nephew and reportedly taken to Korea and buried in a hidden shrine. Thereafter, incense boxes were outlawed in China for the balance of the Ming reign.
There is later history in other cultures, but I am not conversant with those legends.
